Web Style Guide
Creating & Maintaining a Web Style Guide
Nicely thought through article on what is, and, what goes into a Web Style Guide. This one is written from the perspective of delivering a new site design.
The bit I like: principles not rules…
The trick here is to create the guidelines based on principles rather than on rules. Having a rigid system will not work, but knowing the principles and their boundaries will ensure that your website is in tune with the many structural and visual changes that can benefit users.
At the front of the style guide I would consider including a top ten most commonly asked questions. Some visitors to the guide will be coming to find the answer to a minor problem that they currently have. Don’t expect these people to stop their current work in order to absorb all the great principles in the guide. Providing quick help for the issue they have today, no matter how minor, will give the guide a better chance of attracting them back in the future.
